Volvo Trucks has introduced a new version of its Volvo FE truck, which is designed to run only on Methane gas.

The Swedish truck maker has developed the new truck especially for short drives like local distribution and refuse collection, where repeated start and stop is required.

It features 9-litre Euro 6 engine with spark plug technology, that can generate 320 horsepower and 1356 Nm of torque.

The company claimed that the new truck will emit 70% less carbon dioxide than traditional diesel trucks making it environment friendly.

The fuel tank of the new truck is thicker compared to other trucks which can accommodate up to 160 m3 methane gas.

The automatic transmission provides a faster driveline response along with proper driveability like the other versions of the FE, the company added.

Volvo Trucks business manager alternative drivelines Christina Eriksson said, "With the Volvo FE CNG we can now offer companies that drive a lot in urban environments a truck with a far lower environmental impact."

"Many cities the world over are looking for alternatives to diesel-powered trucks. In the field of refuse handling in particular, renewable fuels are often a requirement for securing a purchase contract."

The truck will be launched across Europe in August and the series production is expected to begin in early next year.
