Uber has started a program in the US under which the company will be testing a fleet of electric cars supplied by Chinese automaker BYD.
The program is reportedly Uber's first attempt to focus on an electric vehicle, and it targeted towards non-professional drivers using personal cars in Chicago area.
According to reports, the new program is an attempt by Uber to help drivers buy or lease new or used cars, and presently 25 BYD vehicles are being used by Uber drivers in the city.
Reuters cited Uber spokeswoman Lauren Altmin as saying: We've seen interest in the program already from current and potential Chicago partners (drivers)."
According to car dealership company Green Wheels, One of the most popular options allows Uber drivers to lease the BYD e6 for $200 a week.
For BYD the program with Uber is likely to help the Chinese automaker to enter into the competitive US electric car market, as until now the company's e6 vehicle have been only used in pilot programs.
