Nebraska-based Marathon Ventures is voluntarily recalling bulk and retail packages of raw macadamia nuts as they may be contaminated with Salmonella, which can cause fatal infections in children, and others with weakened immune systems.
The recalled products include macadamia diced nuts of Shurfine and Western Family brands, macadamia nuts of HyVee and chopped macadamia nuts of Market Pantry sold after March 11.
The recall has been initiated by the company after it was notified by US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) following routine testing.
Consumers, who may have bought these items through grocery, food service or any retail outlet across the country, have been urged not to consume these products and should return them to the store of purchase for a full refund or replacement.
Salmonella can cause fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain. If it gets into the blood stream, it may lead to severe illnesses such as arterial infections.
