Lipari Foods Is Recalling Cooked Shrimp Product as It May Be Contaminated with Salmonella

US-based food distributor Lipari Foods is recalling cooked shrimp product as it may be contaminated with Salmonella, according to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The product associated with the recall is Wholey brand Cooked Shrimp Peeled Tail-On 31/40 Finished Count bearing UPC number 094776074556 with Lot numbers, including 30081, 10081, 70081, 30084, and 00884.

This recalled product, which was imported from Indonesia, was distributed to manufacturers and retailers across Ohio, Michigan, Minnesota, West Virginia, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Illinois, and Indiana during 25 July 2013 and 26 July 2013.

Of all the 1336 recalled cases received, about 32 cases are left in the marketplace that have yet to be recovered, the company said.

The recalled product was received by Lipari Foods from a supplier in Indonesia and cleared for distribution by FDA inspectors on 24 July 2013. On 26 July 2013, Lipari Foods was informed that the FDA mistakenly released the product, which had sampled positive for Salmonella contamination. Lipari Foods immediately ceased the distribution of this product, initiated recall procedures, and contacted all customers who have received the contaminated product.

No illnesses have been reported associated with the recall.

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in people with weakened immune systems and can result in fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

In some cases, infection with Salmonella can cause the organism getting into the bloodstream and result in severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.
