Irish meat processor Silvercrest Foods is recalling 10 million burgers from supermarkets across Ireland and Britain over fears that the products may contain horse meat.
This move comes after the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) published the results of a study, which revealed that beef burgers sold in several supermarkets chains in Ireland and the UK contained horse meat.
The burgers containing horse meat were produced by two processing facilities in Ireland - Liffey Meats and Silvercrest Foods, Ireland, and one processing facility in UK - Dalepak Hambleton. The burgers were sold at several supermarkets including in Tesco, Iceland, Dunnes Stores, Lidl and Aldi.
Silvercrest said that it was focusing on a powdered beef-protein additive imported from both Spain and the Netherlands. The additive was used in cheaply priced burgers, which contain about 60% to 70% meat.
Meanwhile, the UK's Food Standards Agency (FSA) said it was considering taking legal action, which could be against supermarkets or suppliers.
