Cal-Maine Foods has entered into an agreement to acquire the commercial egg operations of US-based meat processing firm Pilgrim's Pride for an undisclosed amount.
The acquisition includes two production facilities with a capacity for approximately 1.4 million laying hens and adjacent land located near Pittsburg,Texas.The transaction is expected to be completed in August 2012.
Cal-Maine Foods president and CEO Dolph Baker said that Pilgrim's Pride has a strong brand recognition and a well-established customer base.
"These production facilities will complement our existing operations in Texas and the additional capacity will enhance our ability to serve our customers in the Texas markets,"Baker added.
Cal-Maine Foods,headquartered in Mississippi,US,is involved in the production,grading,packing and sale of fresh shell eggs,including conventional,cage-free,organic and nutritionally-enhanced eggs.
The company's shell eggs are primarily sold across the southwestern,southeastern,mid-western and mid-Atlantic regions of the US.
