Sirane, a UK-based packaging firm, has claimed that its new corn-based food packaging cans increases the shelf-life of brassicas by almost twice.
The company claimed that during trials, cauliflower and broccoli - which usually get spoiled after just a day on the store shelves - was looking fresh despite being kept for five days on the shelves, as result of the vegetables being packaged in Sirane's corn-based film, Sira-Flex Resolve, reported Foodproductiondaily.com.
According to the company, the new corn-based film balances the CO2 and O2 levels within the pack and maintains appropriate moisture vapour humidity.
The firm claimed that the new packaging technology could help cut down food waste, which according to European Commission, is about 89 million tonnes every year.
The company expects increased sales in hot and humid regions. It currently has been operating in countries such as southern part of Africa and the Middle East and Turkey.
