Fujitsu Is Trying to Sell a Fab as It Moves Towards The Fabless Model

Fujitsu is trying to sell a fab as it moves towards the fabless model. Although Japan's Nikkei newspaper says it is talking to TSMC about selling the fab, it is highly unlikely that TSMC has any interest in buying it.

TSMC has repeatedly stated that it believes in clustering its fabs in Taiwan to facilitate technology transfer and create maximum production efficiency.

The Fujitsu fab, in Mie Prefecture in Western Japan, is described as Fujitsu's 'main' fab. Fujitsu has not had many options since the plan for a pan-Japan shared foundry fell through.

Basically Fujitu had the choice of either selling itself to Renesas or going  fabless, and it looks as if it has decided on the latter.

Similar stories appeared in the Nikkei earlier this year, saying that Renesas was selling a fab to TSMC.

TSMC quickly poo-pooed that one and has declined to comment on the current story.
