Nissan Motor, a Japanese automotive company has tied up with NRG Energy's subsidiary NRG eVgo to expand its electric vehicle charging station, Freedom Station chain across Washington DC, US.
Through this plan, eVgo is intending to develop a comprehensive fast charging network in the greater Washington area with charging stations at Dulles Town Center in Loudon County, Arlington County, and District of Columbia at Van Ness.
NRG eVgo mid-Atlantic region director Michael Krauthamer stated that the NRG eVgo Freedom Station at Dulles Town Center gives electric car drivers freedom to drive further and at lower prices than gasoline cars.
"With charging options at home, apartments or work combined with on-the-go charging, the eVgo network, inside and around the Beltway, will make it even easier to choose to drive an electric car in the D.C. area," explained Krauthamer.
In addition, two stations are currently being constructed in Rockville and Towson in Maryland alongside other sites under development stages across the Washington metropolitan area.
eVgo Freedom Stations will offer electric car drivers DC fast charging that is touted to charge a Nissan LEAF to an 80% in less than half-an-hour and Level 2 charging believed to deliver range at a rate of 12mph - 25mph.
Along with the fast charging technology CHAdeMO, eVgo Freedom Station are also keen to add a second DC charger for a new technology.
Nissan electric vehicle infrastructure strategy director Brendan Jones said that adding EV charging infrastructure, particularly CHAdeMO-based fast charging, leads to more consumer interest - and more sales - for Nissan LEAF.
"Having the ability to charge in under 30 minutes at an NRG eVgo Freedom Station means more consumers in the Washington DC metro area can bypass the gas pump and enjoy the savings related to driving a Nissan LEAF," added Jones.
