General Mills to Shut Pastry Manufacturing Facility in UK

General Mills will close its pastry manufacturing facility in Berwick, UK by autumn of 2016.

In this regard, the company has completed collective consultation process with employee representatives and union officials in order to arrive at a decision. The company will now start the closure process which will be undertaken in phases.

The facility closure will affect around 265 employees and the company said it would provide severance and transition benefits to the impacted staff.

The Berwick facility has been manufacturing baking mixes, refrigerated and frozen dough products, reported worldbakers.com.

Recently, General Mills acquired Texas-based meat snacks company EPIC Provisions, in order to expand its natural and organic product portfolio. Following the transaction closure, EPIC would function under General Mills' Annie's business, which was acquired by General Mills more than a year ago. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

EPIC would continue to operate from its current location in Austin, Texas, following the acquisition.

General Mills' new business arm 301 Inc also recently led the Series C funding round of $3m for snack foods manufacturer Rhythm Superfoods. The funding, which was filed through the CircleUp platform, would be used by Rhythm Superfoods to expand its distribution network beyond its current 5,000 stores. The cash injection was also intended provide Rhythm Superfoods with access to resources and technical expertise of General Mills.
