Montreal to Install 106 More Electric Car Charging Stations by Spring 2016

Montreal and the government of Quebec are planning to install 106 electric car charging stations in the city by next spring.

The project is part of the Canadian city's aim to install a total of 1,000 charging stations by 2020.

Between the end of November and next spring, both the Canadian state government and the city will be installing 53 charging stations each.

As part of the project, two types of charging stations will be installed, which include double charging stations of 240 volts and 400 volts rapid charging stations.

The 240 volts charging stations will be equipped along the street and will cost $1 per hour for charging, while the 400 volt fast-charging stations cost $10 per hour to charge.

Most of the charging stations will be installed at the existing parking lots reserved for electric cars in downtown Montreal.

Quebec Mayor Denis Coderre said as part of a pilot project, Montreal had two charging stations in downtown for past year and they were used an average of 60 to 75 times per month.

In addition to the 106 new charging stations, there are around 80 stations across Montreal, which are scheduled to be installed in parking lots rather than on street side by the end of next year.

The first charging stations will be equipped around Saint-Antoine Street by the end of November.
