General Mills Recalls Cheerios Cereal Due to Undeclared Wheat Presence

General Mills is voluntarily recalling 1.8 million boxes of its Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios cereal due to the presence of an undeclared ingredient, wheat, which can be a potential allergen.

The items being recalled were produced on certain days in July at its Lodi facility in California.

The recalled products include four days production of original (yellow box) Cheerios from 14 July to 17 July, and 13 production dates of Honey Nut Cheerios from 12 July to 25 July.

An accidental incident occurred at the facility which saw the inclusion of wheat flour into the gluten free oat floor system, the company said.

The recalled cereal boxes carry plant code LD.

The company has advised consumers with wheat allergies, gluten intolerance or celiac disease to avoid eating these products and contact the company for replacement or full refund.

The company noted that no other varieties of the products manufactured at any other facility of the company have been affected.

General Mills' other gluten-free Cheerios varieties such as Apple Cinnamon Cheerios, Frosted Cheerios and MultiGrain Cheerios, have not been affected and hence are not part of the recall.

The company has provided a helpline to answer customer queries regarding the recall.

The latest recall comes a day after the company announced voluntary recall of frozen Cascadian Farm Cut Green Beans for fear of listeria contamination. The frozen food recall dates back to products manufactured in March 2014.
