Well, this is the final entry in our living room design series. In this series,we've traced some of the trends in Mid-century modern,French style,Victorian living room design, country style, and traditional styles. But,how do all of these styles tie together,if they even do?
To answer this question, maybe taking a look at our final example of a contemporary living room design is in order. So without further ado, take a look at this particular choice in contemporary living room decor and design.
The word'contemporary'can have something of a slippery meaning in that everyone has a general idea of what it means, even if they disagree on the specifics. This can be applied of course to all of the design traditions for living rooms that we've explored in this series.
Contemporary,contrast,and commonality
But,in the 21st century, there is a trend we've seen through out that makes all of the design styles contemporary in their own way.As we've seen,21st century design is about taking the best elements and drawing them into a common space no matter which era they're most associated with.Sometimes this results in some striking contrasts. At other times,it brings the commonalities of what we thought were completely different styles into focus. So what are some examples of what you're seeing above compared to what we've talked about before?
21st century contemporary living room design trends
One broad stroke seems to be that contemporary design draws a lot from the modernist tradition–lots of space, lots of natural light, and leaning on the side of minimalism.Yet,other traditions make their presence known, too.??Natural surfaces and elements that can be found in traditional design, juxtaposition between metals??and wood which is very Victorian, and contrasts between rounded objects and straight lines which is found in French style design all bring this idea of contemporary into focus.
Contemporary design in living rooms and personality
Another broad stroke we can trace in contemporary design is the idea of incorporating personality into a room.??Hobbies, pop culture associations, and other elements that mark a living space are an integral part of contemporary design in the 21st century, not a distraction. The range??on this idea is pretty wide, from the example above of the bird-watching binoculars,to accent walls with blown up photographs of loved one. What with more and more people looking to create their dream home where they live, rather than buying a new home,??it makes sense that contemporary design has moved in this direction.
