The Average Annual Spend Heating Your Home Has Gone up by About £230

Since 2007, c, according to the latest estimates from Uswitch.

Just five years ago, the annual heating bill would have been around £360 - but figures show that the average price is now £587. That equates to a staggering 63 per cent increase in just half a decade.

What's more, when the rest of a standard home's energy usage is calculated, the annual spend is likely to make even the most festive person think about switching off the Christmas lights - it's expected to reach £1,334 by the end of the year.

Director or consumer policy at Uswitch, Ann Robinson, commented on the new figures: "Many consumers are fearful of how they will afford to keep warm during the winter month."

She says that people across the country may feel that they have no choice but to turn the heating down or off. "By doing so [they] risk gambling with their health," she warns, adding that around three-quarters of people went without heating at some point last year.

"With price hikes pushing bills even higher, this figure is likely to rise," she adds.

Consumers who are worried about the increase in energy prices are encouraged to find ways to ensure they keep their bills down this year. Installing LED bathroom lights and opting for low-energy bulbs around the house will help to reduce your electricity usage, and will help the environment at the same time.

Ms Robinson also recommends making sure your home is properly insulated. "There are many low-cost or free insulation offers available that will make homes more energy efficient." Comparing electricity tariffs is also important to ensure you're getting the best value for money - this means not only checking different suppliers, but also the different pricing plans offered within each company.

These steps will reduce the amount of energy we use and the amount we pay. They are "our best defence against the high cost of energy today," she says.
