The Korean ethnic group of China migrated from the Korean Peninsula in the 17th century. They have their own language and characters.
In marital customs, the process includes proposing, choosing an auspicious day and sending betrothal gifts before an engagement.
A matchmaker is necessary between the woman and man. Firstly, the matchmaker is sent to the woman's family to learn about the general situation, which is a similar practice among the Han people. If the man falls in love with a woman, he will propose to the woman. If the woman accepts, the man will send Sizhu, which is a sheet of paper with the man's name and birth date on it. The woman will also show hers to see if they are suited.
If they are matching, the woman will ask the matchmaker to inform the man. The man will choose an auspicious day for the wedding and send gifts, like red and green satin, to the woman. During the wedding, the bridegroom is escorted by the seniors to meet the bride at her home at the set time and offers a pair of wooden wild geese, which symbolize the couple will never part like the wild geese, flying wing to wing.
A ceremony is followed. During the ceremony, two tables are set in the middle of the main room, with pines and bamboos in the middle. Food and wine are set on the table. Under the direction of the presider, the bride and bridegroom make a toast to each other.
Then, the bridegroom enters the bride's room to enjoy the food, including fish, meat, fruit and candies, specially prepared by the bride for the bridegroom. The bridegroom is very serious about the ceremony and acts very politely. Only after the ceremony, is the bridegroom able to bring the bride home.
60th Wedding Anniversary
There is a special marriage in the Korean ethnic group called "Gui Hun Marriage." If a couple is still alive on their 60th wedding anniversary, and their children are in good health with their own children, they can hold their "Gui Hun Marriage."
During the wedding ceremony, the couple should wear their costumes that they wore 60 years ago. On the day, their children and relatives should make a toast to the couple in the order of ages and generations. Thereafter, the happy couple will round the village in their marriage car. All the neighbors will wish them health and longevity.
