A Popular Artist Has Been Jailed After One of His Light Installations Was Mistaken

Light Artist Arrested After 'Gross Misunderstanding'

A popular artist has been jailed after one of his light installations was mistaken for a bomb in New York.

To coincide with NY Design Week,Takeshi Miyakawa assembled illuminated plastic shopping bags on trees and lamp posts around the city.The iconic"I Love New York"logo was printed on the bags,which contained an LED light attached to wires.

A passerby called the police to report a suspicious package after spotting one of the bags attached to a tree in Williamsburg.The NYPD bomb squad investigated the area,which had to be evacuated for two hours.

Miyakawa,50,was arrested in the early hours of Saturday morning and charged with reckless endangerment and placing a false bomb or hazardous substance,among other charges.

Following the arrest,a judge ordered Miyakawa to be held for a month pending a psychological evaluation.

Miyakawa's lawyer,Deborah J Blum,said the arrest was a"gross misunderstanding".

Miyakawa,who creates custom furniture,was born in Japan and relocated to New York in 1989.According to his website,he has worked for acclaimed architect Rafael Violy for the last 20 years.

Speaking to NY Daily News,Violy said:"He's a fabulous human being,a person of extraordinary talent."
