Huangshan occupies the southernmost part of Anhui Province. Huangshan means Yellow Mountain in Chinese and the city is named after the famously scenic Yellow Mountains. The city's current jurisdiction covers much of the historical and cultural region of ancient Huizhou.
For centuries, limited farmland in Huizhou area drove local people to travel out to make a living, bringing about the legendary success of Hui merchants who dominated the Chinese business world up until the 19th century.
The prefecture-level city of Huangshan administers 7 county-level divisions, including 3 districts and 4 counties. The Hongcun village in Yixian county is one of the most beautiful villages around China.
