Peaceful Cart Was Popular in The Folk Activity of Zaohuo and Temple Fairs

Gaoyi Peaceful Cart

Peaceful Cart,a folk artistic form of dancing and singing, was popular in the folk activity of Zaohuo and temple fairs in the Qing Dynasty.Peaceful Cart originated from the ancient entertainment of pushing the cart. And it developed to two persons to perform it.The shape of the prop is similar to the land boat.It is made up of wooden pieces and wrapped by the cloth except the handlebar. The cloth of two sides is symmetric. The wheels are painted in ink.And the nat-awning is also covered with the colored silk fabric. The person in the cart is the qingyi, while the person who pulls the cart is the huadan, and person who pushed the cart acts as the cangtou. When it is performed, person in the cart put hands on the cart, with her/his lower part of the body covered by the cloth. The caidan use a colored silk fabric to pull the cart. And the old man behind put both hands on the handlebar and pushed the cart.

The performers often sing some popular songs or folk songs, such as ask-and-answer,sing in turn and chorus. In the dancing, there are a series of movements, such as the upward, downward, getting stuck, crossing the river, rope skills and daqian, which have the distinct life fun.The most attractive is the hip swaying and bottom dropping of the man who pushes the cart.It is various and funny.Added by the accompaniment of gongs and drums,Peaceful Cart becomes the dominant show in the shehuo and commercial fairs.Peaceful Cart is not only suitable for marching along the street but also good at performing in a fixed place. When several peaceful carts meet, they compete with each other.

At the end of 1970s,Gaoyi natives transformed the Peaceful Cart and created many new plays, such as Chang'e Travel around the Divine Land etc.
