Huji Shuhui (a social gathering of organization of storytellers at Huji Town), which arose from and took its roots in Huji Town in Huimin County of Shandong Province, is a kind of grand meeting of quyi (the folk talking and singing art). Huji, as the largest town in the southeast part of Huimin County in Shandong province, held market fairs on the 2nd, 7th, 12th, 17th, 22nd and 27th of each month. The 12th of the first month of the lunar year was the first large market fair after the Spring Festival was certain to hold shuhui and lantern festival. Huji Shuhui, appeared in the Yuan Dynasty and flourished in the early Qing Dynasty, has witnessed 700 years of history and is still loved by the people today. At the initial stage of Huji Shuhui, it was only a competition activity between the folk art actors, but later on it developed to a spontaneous communication activity with the main purpose of enhancing friendship, and it had a distinctive characteristic of custom.
