However, the API Foils Europe managing director Will Oldham conceded that the upgrade would result in job losses at the site.
The company, which produces decorative foils for high quality packaging, has been finding success in the premium wine and spirits markets. API said that it will focus on foil manufacturing by investing in new metalizing and coating equipment.
Oldham said: "As our central manufacturing site Livingston is the heart of our business and by streamlining operations and focusing on manufacturing it would enable the site to achieve higher productivity. This is a crucial opportunity for the site to upgrade its equipment and secure its position for the long term.
"Unfortunately the proposed changes would result in the number of roles at the site reducing and accordingly a consultation process has commenced.? Nevertheless, a successful transition to a new operating model would result in a higher quality, more sustainable business for all stakeholders; customers, employees and shareholders."
