The Company Permanently Cut The Jobs as Shut Down Two of The Dain Ave Plant's Mills

The Tribune reported that last ninety four employees of Energex Tube were let go last week as the company permanently cut the jobs as shut down two of the Dain Ave plant's mills.

JMC Steel Group, Energex Tube’s parent US company, filed a notice of termination with Ontario's Ministry of Labour last week.

As of Jan. 30, the plant’s eight inch mill as well as the Upsetter Threader Coupling Line will be idled, said Mr Rick Alakas, Canadian Auto Workers Local 523 president. He added that “It is a necessary part of downsizing.”

Mr Alakas said that the eight inch mill requires “a tremendous amount of capital.”

Alakas said the UTC mill is a fairly recent one that was put in a few years ago and there have been difficulties with it in terms of the flow of the product it produced.

The announcement about the job losses at the plant are extremely heart wrenching, making it difficult to break the news to employees.

He added that “This is extremely frustrating. I can’t even begin to say how frustrating it is, especially at this time of the year.”
