Construction Industry Is Facing a Shortage of Steel Recently in Venezuela

Venezuelan Construction Chamber (CVC) said that the Venezuelan construction industry is facing rebar shortage recently since the local steel mill Sidor cut production and another major mill Sidetur supplied most of its rebar to government's housing project.

Consequently, some construction projects have been forced to delay or suspend.

It's learned that Sidor and Sidetur are the two largest steelmakers in Venezuela. The two companies' rebar production in 2011 totaled 769,000 tons.

In this July, the rebar shortage in Venezuela reached 76%, affecting the local construction industry severely.

In October,. Sidor's rebar production decreased to 17,428 tons from 24,000 tons in a month ago, making the rebar shortage worsen in the month.

Hence, CVC urged the government to authorize at least 100,000 tons of rebar imports per month.
