Solar Market Will Return to Stability Around February 2013 Due to Trade Barriers

Solar market to return to stability in February 2013,says SAS chairman Nuying Huang,Taipei;Jackie Chang,DIGITIMES [Thursday 27 September 2012]MK Lu,chairman of Taiwan-based solar wafer and LED sapphire substrate maker Sino-American Silicon(SAS),has indicated that the solar market will return to stability around February 2013 at the latest as China-based competitors exit the market due to trade barriers.

According to Lu,the anti-dumping investigation by the EU has been causing China-based firms to increase the speed of clearing out inventories in September-October to avoid being taxed.

However, starting in November,China is likely to face problems such as retroactive duties which will prevent the firms from dumping inventories and by that time, the market may return to stability, said Lu.Some market observers believe the preliminary result of the EU's anti-dumping investigation is likely to be announced in May 2013 with a 90-day retroactive period, hence China-based firms will ease on dumping shipments around February 2013,according to Lu.

China-based solar firms have been facing financial troubles, added Lu,and if the firms become state-owned,financial information will become less transparent and the firms'competitiveness is likely to decrease.Comparatively,Taiwan-based firms have competitive technologies and solid financial performance,Lu pointed out.
