The Global Economy Showed Modest Recovery Trend

During the six-month period from April 1 through September 30, 2013, the global economy showed modest recovery trend, with the signs of bottoming out in Europe and continued increase in employment in U.S.. The Chinese economy by contrast, showed signs of a slowdown. The Japanese economy was on a gradual recovery trend, with correction of the yen appreciation and rising share value on the back of economic measures and easy monetary policy, recovery in exports and in corporate earnings, and a sign of pickup in consumer spending.

The market environment surrounding Nippon Chemi-Con Group remained mixed, with weak demand for PCs and other digital appliances and strong demand for air conditioners and PV power systems.

Amid this business environment, Nippon Chemi-Con Group steadily implemented measures in "structural reform" announced in October last year. The measures included elimination and consolidation of production facilities, reduction of personnel cost, and business selection and focus to reduce fixed cost. At the same time, we reduced inventory and capital investment to enhance our financial foundations. We also focused on increasing earning power through launch of new businesses and expansion of new products sales and promoted shift to management structure capable of generating stable profits.

As for new product development and new businesses, we launched onto the market new products optimized depending on the application, worked on sales expansion of conductive polymer hybrid aluminum electrolyticA polarized capacitor exhibiting a very high capacitanceThat property of a system of conductors and dielectrics which permits the storage of electricity when potential difference exists between the conductors. Its value is expressed as the ratio of a quantity of electricity to a potential difference. A capacitance value is always positive./volume ratio that consists of two electrodes immersed in an electrolyte, with a chemical film that acts as a dielectricThe insulating material between the plates of the capacitor. The material is chosen for its ability to permit electrostatic attraction and repulsion to take place across it. The material will have the property that energy required to establish an electric field is recoverable in whole or in part, as electric energy. Also through sales expansion, our electric double layer capacitor for automotive use was newly adopted by another automaker.

We also focused on development of new technologies including a technology to make the electrolyte, a key material for aluminum electrolyticA polarized capacitor exhibiting a very high capacitanceThat property of a system of conductors and dielectrics which permits the storage of electricity when potential difference exists between the conductors.
