According to data released by the Korea Iron & Steel Association (KOSA), the country’s heave plate imports totaled 1.63 million tons in the January-October period, slumping by 42% year on year. In the given period of time, the imports of heavy plates from China totaled 765,900 tons, decreasing by 46%; those from Japan were at 836,700 tons, falling by 39%, both compared to the figures in the same period of 2012. Industry sources said that the dip in the country’s heavy plate imports was caused by sluggish demand from shipbuilders and construction companies.
