The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported on Thursday that for this year, the US imported 10,375,000 net tons of steel, down by 12% compared to the same period last year. Of the 10 million total steel imports, 8,178,000 net tons were of finished steel, also down 9% year on year. However, in April, total steel imports were up 4 percent from March. In April, imports from Asia and Europe accounted for the bulk of large volume imports into the US. Countries such as South Korea, Japan, Germany, China and Taiwan accounts for nearly 40% of US April imports of finished steel.
