The Electrical and Electronics Industries Benevolent Association(EEIBA)has announced new plans for its charity at a re-launch event in London.

The rethink of the charity came about following a research project conducted by the EEIBA to understand what the industry wants, combined with a business review.

Issues raised included the perception that EEIBA had lost awareness at a grass roots level, and has not moved with the times.

A number of changes carried out by the charity has seen a 40 per cent increase in funding available to beneficiaries over the past two years.

Changes already implemented include outsourcing the charity's finance function to reduce overheads by 50 per cent;reducing IT and admin expenditure by 60 per cent;and moving to more cost effective offices.

The keynote speaker at the event was Nick Hewer, star of the BBC show The Apprentice who was chosen for having worked closely with Lord Alan Sugar and his electronics business.

Speaking on the changes taking place at the charity,EEIBA president Ian Humphreys said:"The research and business review reinforced Trustees'views that the charity had lost touch with the industry that we serve. There is still a clear need for the help offered by EEIBA,so we are committed to improving our services to deliver the best levels of care and support."
