Sonoco Enters Into Consultation with The Workforce

Global packaging company Sonoco has announced its intention to enter into consultation with the workforce regarding the closure of the Carrickmacross packaging plant in County Monaghan, Ireland, in November 2013.

The plant, which manufactures thermoformed packages for food processors in Ireland and other parts of Europe mainly, had been experiencing a loss of volume and profitability over the past several years.

According to Sonoco, the pattern is continuing through 2013, leaving no possible option other than to consider the facility shut-down.

Sonoco Plastics thermoforming vice president and general manager Jeff DiPasquale said the company had decided to close the operations, due to uncertian market conditions and a financially challenging competitive environment.

"This decision in no way reflects on the performance of our Carrickmacross employees who have always provided high levels of commitment, safety, quality and productivity," DiPasquale added.

Sonoco does not expect the first reduction in jobs to occur until October 2013 in the event the plant closes.

After this, the company plans to gradually scale back operations, targeting a plant closure on 1 November 2013.
