In the first quarter this year, Turkey's scrap imports increased by 1.2 percent to 4.40 million mt, valued at $1.70 billion, down 1.2 percent, while the country's domestic scrap supply volume decreased by 3.4 percent to 2.88 million mt, all on year-on-year basis, according to the report released by the Turkish Iron and Steel Producers' Association (TCUD).
In the first quarter of the current year, Turkey's scrap imports from European countries increased by 13.8 percent year on year to 2.39 million mt, constituting 54.5 percent of total scrap imports, while scrap imports from the US contracted by 38.6 percent to 894,000 mt, constituting 20.4 percent of the total. In the given period, Turkey's scrap imports from CIS countries surged by 104.3 percent to 750,000 metric tons, with imports from Russia increasing by 87.2 percent to 619,000 metric tons, both on year-on-year basis.
In the first quarter this year, Turkey's scrap consumption decreased by 0.7 percent to 7.28 million metric tons, in line with the 0.5 year-on-year decline in crude steel output in the same period. In the given period, scrap consumption in Turkey by electric arc furnaces decreased by 0.7 percent year on year to 6.71 million mt.
