According to report from Japan News Network, the price of rice fell sharply in 2014 and it gets farmers into trouble.
Niigata, Japan's most famous rice growing areas, produced 660,000 tons rice last year. The price of rice produced in Niigata fell 42 yen per kg to 308 yen and has become the lowest in the past 10 years.
The decline in rice price is due to the decline in consumption. According to an estimate by the Japanese Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ministry, the average rice spent in Japan was 56.9kg in 2013, less than before.
Despite the decline in rice price, the price of chemical fertilizers and pesticides keeps increasing, which makes Japanese farmer poor.
