Smith & Nephew Selects DS Smith's Recyclable Packaging to Ship Orthopedic Devices

Medical equipment producer Smith & Nephew (S&N) is using DS Smith's reusable and recyclable polypropylene (PP) packaging for transporting orthopedic surgical devices.

DS Smith Plastics, Extruded Products, a business unit of DS Smith, has provided custom-designed and reusable PP packaging to securely transport a set of orthopedics prosthesis and tools cases.

The polypropylene reusable and recyclable packaging serves as a replacement to single-use packaging for shipping fragile devices to hospitals.

DS Smith claims that the packaging is fully recyclable and can be used to manufacture new boxes at the end of their useful life.

With water and moisture resistant properties, polypropylene is free from fiber and non-porous that prevents contamination.

DS Smith’s polypropylene packaging solution has strengthened hardened plastic framing inserts along the top that make them stackable for effective storage and comfortable palletization for transportation.

Each packaging box is also provided with a non-perforated plastic handle to facilitate handling and avoid entering contaminates from packaging.

The polypropylene packaging also features S&N’s branding color and logotype on all four sides of the box.

To prevent manipulation by unauthorized persons, the packaging box is also provided with safety closure.

According to DS Smith, the polypropylene is fully recyclable and can be used to produce new boxes at the end of their useful life.

For the pharmaceutical and medical industries, DS Smith provides aseptic/sterilized transit packaging solutions, temperature controlled packaging solutions.

The company also offers storage, shipping and distributions solutions, sensitive product solutions, as well as secondary and promotion packaging solutions.

DS Smith produces sterile packaging solutions ranging from breathable bags for steam sterilization to covered trays for e-beam sterilization and gamma stable packages for irradiation.

The company manufactures aseptic sterilized AkyPure boxes for transporting full or empty vials, prefilled syringes, cartridges, bottles, aluminum or plastic tubes, and components such as needles, push plungers, injection pens and springs.
