Polycom Announced Partnership with IBM Research to Work Together on Cloud Video Services

Polycom today announced a partnership with IBM research to work together on developing video services using cloud computing.

The company already has its own video platform called Polycom RealPresence, but wants to find ways of deploying the solution in a cloud environment – be it public, private or hybrid – and offering it to companies as a 'Video-as-a-Service' (VaaS) option.

IBM is helping to test RealPresence and make sure it adheres to the security and performance standards required when delivering such software in the cloud, for scenarios such as any sudden requirements for significantly more or less users to be supported.

Once testing of current capabilities has completed, the two companies will look to developing advancements for the offering, such as more compatibility with other video solutions for those who want to take advantage of video in the cloud but don't want to concern themselves with which equipment they have in the office.

"Together with Polycom, we can help customers prepare for the future of this industry, whether they choose premises-based video solutions or private, public, or hybrid cloud delivery models," said Ken King, vice-president of business development for IBM Research.

"Ultimately, it's about helping Polycom develop new, innovative video products on a cloud computing platform that creates systems across various industry verticals. By co-developing with Polycom, we can help customers collaborate and make decisions more quickly."

RealPresence will continue to be marketed as a Polycom system despite IBM's involvement. The companies hope it will also continue to be sold into enterprises, but appeal service providers as well, so they in turn can build their own VaaS offerings.

However, neither firm has been forthcoming as to when these research developments will be put into practice and go on sale.
