Reusable packaging producer Tosca has launched a reusable plastic container (RPC) for packing, shipping and displaying individual cartons of eggs.
Featuring the SmartWall design, the package is said to help in simplifying re-stocking and reducing shrinkage from damaged goods. They also help in labour savings and reducing waste.
According to a study conducted by Sensitech in April 2014, the new containers enable the eggs to get cooled 10 times faster in comparison to other corrugated cardboard. The study was conducted at the Chase, Kansas facility of Cal-Maine, the largest producer and distributor of fresh shell eggs in the US.
The company said that since eggs begin to deteriorate the moment they are laid, the faster they are cooled, the better is their quality.
North Carolina State University , Ph.D professor from the Prestage Department of Poultry Science had analysed the cooling study results. He said: "Egg deterioration begins with moisture loss and the release of CO2 into the surrounding air. Refrigeration slows both of these processes thereby extending the shelf life of the egg."
Some of the other benefits of the new containers include better egg protection, and better ventilation of the packed eggs.
Tosca president Eric Frank said: "Tosca has a history of innovation dating back more than 50 years, and our new egg container is evidence that we continue to develop smarter solutions that drive customer value. We are extremely pleased that the feedback we've received indicates it is superior in design to anything currently available.
