Glen's Market and Catering Recalling 2,532 Pounds of Raw Ground Beef Products

Glenn’s Market and Catering, an establishment based in Watertown, Wisconsin, is recalling 2,532 pounds of raw ground beef products as they may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, according to the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).

The products subject to the recall are various size packages of Glenn's Market ground round, ground chuck and ground beef sold between 22 December 2012 and 4 January 2013. These products were sold only at Glenn's Market and Catering in Watertown, Wisconsin from the retail meat case.

The recall was initiated after FSIS was notified by the Wisconsin Division of Public Health of an investigation into E. coli O157:H7 illnesses. The department noted that three case-patients with the outbreak strain were identified in the state with illness onset dates ranging from 29 December 2012 to 1 January 2013.

FSIS is continuing to work with the Watertown Department of Public Health, the Wisconsin Division of Public Health, the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on this investigation.

The establishment and the FSIS are concerned that some product may be frozen and in shoppers' freezers.

This recall has been classified as Class I, which indicates a health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.

Consumption of food contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 may cause serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses. The symptoms include severe abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea.
