SAIC-GM-Wuling (SGMW), General Motors' micro-van joint venture in China, has opened its new passenger car production plant in Liuzhou, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China.
The company has invested $1.3bn in the first phase of the construction of the new passenger car plant, which initially produces vehicles from the Baojun family.
Built on an area of two million square metre, the new passenger car production plant is expected to deliver an annual manufacturing capacity of 400,000 units.
A new powertrain manufacturing facility with an annual capacity up to 400,000 engines per year is under construction at the new passenger car production plant.
After the completion of passenger car plant, SGMW is also planning to enhance its R&D capability by integrating engineering design and testing resources and establishing a systematic capability for product development and technical research.
SGMW is a joint venture between SAIC with 50.1% stake, GM China with 44.0% stake and Wuling Motors with 5.9% stake.
