In order to ensure enhanced cocoon production and create more jobs for the youth in the state, the Jammu and Kashmir Government has established a new reeling unit in Bhagat-e-Kanipora of Budgam district.
Inaugurating the new unit, J&K Agriculture Minister Ghulam Hassan Mir said the move is intended at developing the post-cocoon sector.
He said rather than exporting cocoons to other states or countries, the government would like to ensure that the cocoons are given a final form of a finished product within the state itself. This would lead to increased job creation, while helping the cocoon growers to reap reasonable prices for their produce.
The silk industry of Kashmir once enjoyed a global repute for its excellent quality and lustre, but has waned gradually over the years. However, now with the measures initiated by the Sericulture Department of the state, the industry is once again trying to recover and re-establish itself at its past glorious position.
