Heineken has expressed interest in acquiring Slovenian brewer Pivovarna Lasko, in a deal that would allow the Dutch brewing company to enter into Slovenia where it is not currently present.

Lasko is up for sale since last year and seeks close to $79m in cash injection from a buyer to cut its debts, Reuters reported.

Heineken plans to acquire a 45% stake in Pivovarna Lasko, Slovenian national news agency STA reported.

The Reuters quoted Heineken as stating that Pivovarna's Lasko and Union beer brands' respective facilities offered the possibility for Heineken to bring in its other brands.

Heineken also witnessed opportunities to expand Lasko's product presence to regions outside Slovenia.

Investment funds including KKR, Bain Capital, CVC Capital and Mid Europa Partners have been called to submit binding bids for Lasko, which is expected to be sold this summer, Reuters said citing local media.

A potential investor will initially buy new shares in Lasko and will then announce a complete buyout.

The takeover should be in line with Slovenia's legislation, under which any party that buys at least a third of the company should make an offer for the remainder.
