In order to make Delhi more energy efficient, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) has launched a scheme wherein a Compact Fluorescent Lamp (CFL) will be provided for just Rs. 15 in exchange for an incandescent bulb!

The scheme, 'Bachat Lamp Yojana', is expected to commence from August.

Under the scheme, an incandescent bulb can be exchanged with a CFL by going to the nearest BSES or National Delhi Power limited (NDPL) office and showing the recent electricity bill. A CFL bulb costs around Rs. 150 on an average.

With the implementation of this scheme, we are trying to save energy. It is expected that at the household level, every electricity bill would be reduced by 20-30 percent. We expect around 2.8 million CFLs to be distributed in Delhi alone, ' a BEE official said.

The scheme has earlier been launched in 16 states of the country.

The results from other states have been extremely encouraging. In Kerala, 13 million CFLs were distributed while some 1.1 million were distributed in Karnataka, ' he added.

Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) chairman P. S. Sudhakar said that 'with this scheme, consumers will have twin benefits of lower electricity bills and helping meet the energy efficiency targets of the state'.

He added that the estimated peak load reduction by implementation of the scheme would be 100 MW.
