GM Has Started Production of Chinese Designed Sail Compact sedan and Hatchback in India

US carmaker General Motors (GM) has started production of its Chinese designed Sail compact sedan and hatchback in India.

Being produced at the carmaker's Talegaon facility near Mumbai, India, the new Sail was designed by SAIC, the Chinese carmaker which holds a 50% stake in the in GM India's operations.

According to the carmaker, the Sail will be on sale in India as a sedan and hatchback in October 2012.

GM India president Lowell Paddock was quoted by Reuters as saying that SAIC brings to the company a regional focus and more of an emerging market focus.

"Sail is in some ways perhaps the first vehicle designed with primarily Asian customer requirements." Paddock said.

The US carmaker revealed that the production of SAIC's new larger passenger van in India is scheduled to start by late 2012.

GM India sales declined 11% during the first half of 2012, while it has sold about 111,510 cars during 2011.
