Chinese automaker BYD has signed an agreement with the government of Canada to build electric buses for Windsor,Ontario,Canada.
As per the deal,BYD will build 500 buses per year in the city and the first purchase will be 12 BYD K9 electric buses,to be followed by other orders.
BYD claims that its buses can reach 186 miles on a single charge,a recharge taking up to 30 minutes.
Under the deal,the Chinese automaker will also work with Enwin,a local public service group,to recycle bus batteries that are out of service in a local energy storage location.
The company said that Windsor,Ontario will be the first municipality in North America to have a fleet of all-electric buses produced by the automaker,according to inautonews.com.
At the end of last year,the company had opened its North American headquarters in Los Angeles,while last June it signed agreements with both Singapore and Frankfurt,Germany.
