The projector market is expected to grow by 8-10% this year due to advancements in projector technologies that use either LED or lasers as light sources instead of traditional bulbs. Companies such as Acer, Optoma and ViewSonic are all putting out new projector models that feature the technologies and will be available for viewing at this year's Computex. The new models' advancements coupled with price differences within US$200 compared with bulb-lit projectors will help expand their market in 2012, according to industry sources. Texas Instruments DLP Asia products director, Zhiguang Huang, said that projectors with a LED light source have approximately 500-600 lumens, making them more suitable for home use. Laser-source ones on the other hand will have much better efficiency and have a high lumen range from 2,000-5,000, added Huang. Huang said that projectors that do not use bulbs can save US$75-200 in costs and have a lifespan of 20-30 thousand hours, making them very useful for classrooms. He also said that it will take 2-3 years for sales of the projectors to take off and that due to the numerous number of LED lighting makers, costs will be competitive. Source: DIGITIMES
