The Promotion of New Projects Will Break a New Steel Production Record for Mexico

The promotion of new projects in the automotive industry will break a new steel production record for Mexico, pointing to some 19 million tons, said Hugo Solis, president of Mexico’s chapter of the Association for Iron and Steel Technology (AIST ).

At a press conference this week, he said that the new investment projects culminating in 2013 to replace imports reveal that the Mexican steel industry will reach record-breaking production, as happened last year when it reached 18.6 million tons.

"Investment projects like The Fénix of Altos Hornos de México of US$2.5 billion or DeAcero’s US$500, or Ternium’s US$1.1 billion are operating some half of its capacity because they are in the starting curve but others are already at 100 percent or will be sometime this year."

He also announced that on March 23, the Conac Steel Congress 2014 will commence in Monterrey, enabling companies of the industrial sector to exchange technical experiences on performance.
