Woolworths Had Cooperated with Extrupet to Rolled out New Sustainable Shopping Bags

Woolworths South Africa, in partnership with Africa’s post-consumer plastic recycling firm Extrupet, rolled out new sustainable shopping bags for its product packaging.

The newly unveiled reusable shopping bags, made from 100% rPET bags, are expected to keep customers abreast of the need for and importance of recycling, according to bizcommunity.com.

As per the partnership terms, Extrupet will supply rPET to Propet in Cape Town to manufacture the polyester fibre, which will be sent to the nation's major household textile manufacturer Romatex to produce roller fabric.

The fabric is then transported to the Woolworths Flagship Enterprise Development Project, Isikhwama, to roll out the newly launched bags.

Each bag carries a tag describing the manufacturing process, which Woolworths expects to educate customer on the need to purchase environmentally friendly products.

Woolworths shopper project manager Ralph Jewson said the project was initiated to reduce the amount of virgin plastic that is consumed and burdening the country's landfill sites.
