Semiconductor Assembly Has Generated Revenue of $24.5bn in 2012, a 2.1% Growth

ASE led the market with revenue of $4.4bn

Worldwide semiconductor assembly and test services (SATS) market has generated revenue of $24.5bn in 2012, a 2.1% growth compared to the prior year, according to the report from Gartner.

ASE led the market with revenue of $4.4bn and with a market share of 17.9%, which includes 80.5% of packaging, followed by the Amkor Technologies with a revenue of $2.8bn.

SPIL occupied the third place with revenue of $2.2bn that included 90% from packaging and 10% from test, while the STATS ChipPAC was in fourth place with 1.7bn revenue.

Gartner research vice president Jim Walker said that the SATS market experienced 1.8% growth in 2011 and recorded a slow-growth in 2012.

"Weakness in the PC market, which started in 2011 and carried into 2012, and lower overall consumer demand were contributors to the slow growth. This weak demand for semiconductor devices resulted in inventory buildup for much of the year," Walker added.

According to the Gartner, another factor for the slow growth in the market in 2012 was the over investment in both SATS and integrated device manufacturer (IDM) packaging capacity in 2010 and 2011.

The oversupply by many device makers for the advanced and traditional packaging capability resulted in weaker pricing environment for outsourcing services during the year.
