Intershield 7100LWT, part of AkzoNobel’s International line of marine coatings products, has received U.S. Navy approval to Military Specification MIL-PRF-3135 Type III Class 2, Grade B.
Intershield 7100LWT, ultra lightweight, self-leveling, zero volatile organic compound (VOC), epoxy underlayment, also exceeds the US Navy’s criteria for MIL-PRF-3135 Type III weight requirement of weighing less than one pound per square feet (lb/sqft) at quarter inch (4.88kg/m2 at 0.635cm).
This approval follows many years of research dedicated to meeting the US Navy’s stated aims of reducing weight on naval vessels.
“Application of traditional underlayment and deck coverings can add considerable weight to a vessel.’’ said John Mangano, Regional Marketing Manager- North & South America of AkzoNobel’s Marine Coatings business. “Compared to traditional systems, Intershield 7100LWT ultra lightweight underlayment can reduce weight up to 59%.”, he added. Intershield 7100LWT can be used with or without primers as a primary deck covering or to level uneven decks at both new-building and maintenance & repair.
Designed for use in areas subject to high continuous abrasion such as exterior decks, mess areas, berthing spaces, passageways and galleys, plus wet areas such as showers and heads, Intershield 7100LWT can be top coated with various coating systems or with tile and carpet. This new product complements our existing range of U.S. Navy approved products.
