Indian Motor Vehicle Production in December Last Year Increased 1.2 Percent

According to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), Indian motor vehicle production in December last year increased 1.2 percent as compared to December 2011 and was up 3.1 percent month on month with 1,697,625 vehicles produced. In the first nine months of the current Indian fiscal year (started April 1, 2012), India's passenger car output rose 2.2 percent over the same period last year.

In April-December 2012, motor vehicle sales in India increased by 4.6 percent year on year, with the country's passenger car and light vehicle sales in April-December increasing by 8.4 percent and the commercial vehicles segment registering growth of 0.7 percent, both on year-on-year basis. However, in December Indian total motor vehicle sales increased by 2.8 percent compared to December 2011, while passenger car sales fell by 12.5 percent year on year.

Meanwhile, in the April-December period of last year India's total motor vehicle exports decreased by 2.9 percent year on year. Passenger car and light vehicle exports rose by 10.5 percent and commercial vehicle exports registered an increase of 4.7 percent in the nine months in question, both on year-on-year basis. The SIAM said that passenger car and light vehicle exports from India rose by 31.6 percent in December 2012 compared to the same month of the previous year.
