Hikers in The Area of Purgatory Brook May Soon Encounter a Sight Not Often Seen

Hikers in the area of Purgatory Brook may soon encounter a sight not often seen in the woods of Wah Lum: Large trucks and other equipment working on timber harvesting. The project was originally scheduled for the winter but will get under way this week after a series of delays. The harvest of trees from the 78-acre Nadeau Forest, adjacent to the Wah Lum land and owned by the New England Forestry Foundation, was supposed to have started in January, but warm weather led to soft ground that made it tough for loggers to maneuver their heavy equipment without damaging the earth. Dan Reed, a consulting forester with New England Forestry Consultants, said ground conditions are finally ideal for the project. The consultants group drew up the logging plan for Nadeau Forest. The foundation’s land is typically accessed by an old logging road leading from a Purgatory Road parking area. That entry could not accommodate the equipment needed for the timber harvesting, however, Reed said, so an agreement was reached to allow the creation of the new access road built last fall on Wah Lum property. As part of that agreement, a foundation spokesperson said it would do some upgrades to the logging road and other areas of the town land. Reed said Monday that the organization plans to hold a public tour of the timber harvesting project 8-10 a. M. Aug. 9. Source: nashuatelegraph
