Lithium Sulphur Batteries Could Have More Than Double, and Perhaps Five Times

Lithium sulphur batteries could have more than double, and perhaps five times, the energy density of Li-ion cells.

And they are not just lab curiosities: rechargeable Li2S batteries from Sion Power of Arizona were used in QinetiQ's Zephyr electric aeroplane, which flew continuously for 14 days in 2010, running from sunlight in the day and batteries at night.

Oxfordshire-based Oxis Energy is one of the companies aiming to commercialise Li2S batteries, with its efforts recognised earlier this year when Far-Eastern manufacturing giant GP Batteries signed a deal to take the technology towards production.
