Sensor-based sorting technology provider Tomra Sorting Recycling has secured a contract from Australia-based SKM Recycling (SKM) to supply automated sorting technology.
Under the contract, Tomra will supply 40 Autosort units featuring new 3D laser technology SKM’s three new sorting facilities being developed in the Australia to help reduce waste going to landfill.
SKM, which is engaged in processing recyclables from household and commercial streams, is constructing the three new plants to process over 350,000 tons of kerbside collected material.
Planned to be commissioned in 2018, the advanced materials recovery facilities will primarily focus on processing paper, plastics, metals and glass, sorting them into high quality products.

SKM’s Laverton plant aims to become the most technically advanced and automated recyclables processing plant on the continent or even worldwide by integrating multiple steps of Tomra Sorting technology into the sorting of paper and other recyclables.
The technological capability will provide SKM with a competitive advantage, and allow it to meet increasingly stringent end-product quality demands.
Tomra said that the improved sorting technology will help in extracting greater percentage of recyclable product from the residential recycling stream, reduce landfill waste materials, and facilitate the development of new recyclable grades to meet the market demands.
