Tencate and Basf Have Partnered to Develop and Produce Thermoplastic Composite Materials

Advanced composites company TenCate and chemical company BASF have partnered to develop and produce thermoplastic composite materials for mass vehicle production.

The new partnership will offer car manufacturers with custom-engineered custom-engineered applications for high-performance composite structures, reducing weight and lower carbon dioxide emissions.

In addition the thermoplastic composites will help car manufacturers economise on the fuel consumption of automobiles and reduce production cycle times.

Under the new alliance, BASF will contribute its know-how production and formulation of its proprietary Ultramid PA, Ultradur PBT and Ultrason PESU portfolios, while TenCate will bring its experience in composite manufacturing.

BASF Germany Engineering Plastics Europe head Maas-Brunner said using continuous fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites will reduce the processing costs of lightweight automotive constructions.

"By working together with TenCate, we intend to jointly achieve this breakthrough," Brunner said.
